Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) Repository

MITA 4.0 Initiative

MITA NextGen Workgroup

The MITA NextGen Workgroup is dedicated to advancing the Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) framework. This team, composed of Medicaid business and technical experts from State Medicaid Agencies (SMAs), vendors, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is focused on evaluating and enhancing MITA 3.0 components for inclusion in MITA 4.0. Having completed the initial phase of drafting an architecture vision, the team is now refining the Business Architecture, Information Systems and Technical Architectures.

Sub-Workgroups

Business Architecture

Goal: Develop a framework for SMAs to use as they develop and maintain business architectures to support their Medicaid Enterprises. The objectives are to

  • Develop the Target Business Architecture that describes how the enterprise needs to operate to achieve the business goals, and respond to the strategic drivers set out in the architecture vision, in a way that addresses the statement of architecture work and stakeholder concerns
  • Identify candidate architecture roadmap components based upon gaps between the baseline and target business architectures

Technical Architecture

Goal: Develop a framework for SMAs to use as they design, implement, and maintain the technical architectures that support their Medicaid Enterprise Systems. The objectives are to

  • Provide guidance to SMAs on how to identify, design, and integrate the technical components necessary to support SMA capabilities and meet desired business outcomes
  • Establish reference models that align technical infrastructure, platforms, and services to support scalability, security, reliability, and performance
  • Enable leverage, reuse, and interoperability of technical solutions within and across SMAs through standardized approaches and shared services
  • Offer viewpoints to SMAs on how to develop architectural models and diagrams that communicate the relationships between systems, platforms, and infrastructure supporting MES capabilities
  • Define the characteristics and requirements needed to support a resilient and future-ready MES technical foundation that enables continuous improvement and innovation

Information Architecture

Goal: Develop a framework for SMAs to use as they develop and maintain information architectures to support their Medicaid Enterprises. The objectives are to

  • Provide guidance to SMAs on how to identify and analyze the information needed to support SMA capabilities to meet desired business outcomes
  • Establish reference models that support alignment of data management capabilities and information to enable leverage, reuse, interoperability and exchanging information within and across SMAs
  • Provide viewpoints to SMAs on how to develop standard models and diagrams that communicate how business, information and technology work together to deliver SMA/MES capabilities and meet desired business outcomes
  • Establish the characteristics and requirements needed to support a mature MES that meets desired business outcomes

The NextGen Workgroup is making substantial strides in advancing the MITA framework, ensuring it continues to be an indispensable resource that empowers Medicaid Enterprise System users, planners, and developers to effectively serve enrollees and providers.

The NextGen Workgroup continues to recruit relevant subject-matter experts so please contact us at MITAGovBoard@cms.hhs.gov, if you are interested in joining the workgroup.
